If you’re looking to escape the polished storefronts of downtown Galena and find something truly quaint, gritty, and soulful, you need to set your sights on Council Hill Station. Tucked away in the rolling hills of the Driftless Area, this isn’t just a stop along the way — it’s a living piece of history that feels like it’s been plucked straight out of a frontier novel.

A Relic of the 1850s

Stepping onto the grounds of Council Hill Station is like stepping through a portal. Established around 1854, this site was originally a general store and a bustling railway station when the railroad first arrived in Jo Daviess County.

Today, the site is a beautifully preserved collection of mid-19th-century architecture. You’ll find the original station/store, the ruins of an old stone woolen mill, and a massive barn that has seen nearly two centuries of Illinois winters. It’s the kind of place where the floorboards creak with stories and the atmosphere is thick with authentic “old-world” charm.

Jamie Jones: The Soul of the Station

While the history is the draw, Jamie Jones is the reason people stay. Jamie isn’t just the owner — he’s a local legend and a true one-of-a-kind character.

  • The Ultimate Host: Don’t be surprised if Jamie is the first person you see when you roll up. He’s known for greeting almost every visitor personally with a warm welcome.
  • A Custom Tour: If you have a moment, Jamie is often happy to give a custom tour of the property, sharing the deep-cut history of the station and the mill ruins that you won’t find in any guidebook.
  • The Music: Jamie is an amazing musician. Whether he’s picking a guitar on the porch or leading a full jam session inside the old general store, his music provides the perfect, soulful soundtrack to the rugged scenery.
