Longest Kayaking Trip in Illinois

galena-river-kayak-sunset - Outdoors in Galena, IL (Driftless Region)

Looking for the ultimate all-day outdoor escape? Get away from the hustle and bustle of modern life on what is arguably the longest continuous kayaking trip in Illinois that includes a full shuttle service.

Our Great Galena River Kayaking Adventure is an epic 8-hour paddle down the entire navigable stretch of the Galena River. You’ll meet us at Nuts Outdoors in Galena, IL, and we’ll shuttle you across the state border to New Diggings, Wisconsin. From there, you’ll paddle your way back through time, ending your monumental journey at the docks in downtown Galena, just a block from our store.

What to Expect on the River

On this trip, you won’t feel like you are in Illinois—you probably won’t even feel like you are in the 21st century! The Driftless Region is completely unique, and you will cross through an awe-inspiring landscape featuring dramatic limestone bluffs, untouched prairies, and rolling hills.

Because this public waterway flows through active farms, you may see cows cooling off in the water! If you encounter them, just approach slowly and paddle around them gently. You may also need to slide under a safe, low-voltage electric cattle fence using your paddle. Wildlife is abundant out here; you are highly likely to spot deer, bald eagles, muskrats, beavers, and more.

Easily Accessible from Major Midwest Cities

Despite feeling a million miles away from civilization, Galena is incredibly easy to reach for a weekend adventure. Here are the approximate driving distances to Nuts Outdoors from major regional hubs:

  • Rockford, IL: ~78 miles (about a 1.5-hour drive)
  • Madison, WI: ~91 miles (about a 1.5-hour drive)
  • Iowa City, IA: ~99 miles (about a 1.5-hour drive)
  • Chicago, IL: ~165 miles (about a 2.5 to 3-hour drive)

It’s the perfect distance for a quick weekend getaway to disconnect and recharge in nature.

Is This Trip Right for You?

While the river’s current will aid you downstream and the water itself is mostly calm and novice-friendly, this is a significant expedition. The sheer duration of the trip (8+ hours) requires physical endurance and stamina. You should be comfortable sitting and paddling for long periods.

Also, keep in mind that because you are paddling through remote wilderness and private farmlands, there are no official public restrooms along the route. You will need to embrace the great outdoors!

If you’re in good health and ready for an unforgettable experience, this is the perfect trip for dedicated groups, birthday celebrations, and adventurous bachelor or bachelorette parties.
